Recently, I was a virtual guest speaker at a wellness workshop that addressed the impact of mental health and stress on our overall well-being.
Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, substantially impacting our cognition, emotions, and behaviours.
Stress is the body’s physiological and psychological reaction to adapt and respond to any change. Understanding these components’ interconnectedness is crucial and empowering, giving us the tools to achieve optimal well-being.
The Brain and Its Neurotransmitters for Happiness
I elucidated the function of neurotransmitters, namely dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin, in governing our emotions and responses to stress, empowering us with this knowledge:
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter linked to gratification and incentive. However, stress can diminish its secretion, resulting in decreased happiness.
Serotonin has a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Stress reduces serotonin levels, leading to feelings of melancholy and anxiety.
Endorphins, natural analgesics, are synthesized in the body when people engage in physical activities and laugh. Stress diminishes the production of endorphins, hence heightening pain sensitivity.
Oxytocin, sometimes called the “love hormone,” facilitates the development of trust and emotional connections with others. Stress reduces oxytocin levels, hindering the process of developing relationships.
I examined the impact of stress on different physiological systems by focusing on the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the subsequent secretion of cortisol.
Key Points
Psychological well-being and stress substantially impact one’s entire state of health.
Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin significantly regulate our emotional state and overall mental health. Understanding their functions can empower us to take control of our mental well-being.
Prolonged stress can result in severe health complications, such as cardiovascular disorders, respiratory impairments, compromised immunological function, gastrointestinal disturbances, muscular discomfort, and dermatological conditions.
Gaining insight into the correlation between mental health, stress, and weight gain can facilitate regulating stress levels, selecting more nutritious food options, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. For instance, practising mindfulness, engaging in regular physical activity, and seeking social support are effective strategies to manage stress and promote mental well-being.
May you have a productive week.
Sincerely,
Dr. Agnes
